What Is A Tankless Water Heater?

A tankless water heater provides endless hot water as needed. If you have a traditional tank water heater in your home, chances are, you’ve probably run out of hot water at some point. I remember growing up and no one wanted to be the last to take a shower in the morning, as the hot water was almost always gone.

With a tankless, or instant, hot water heater, the water is heated as needed. This provides endless hot water, better energy efficiency, and more space in your home. We’ve installed all kinds of water heaters, and truthfully a traditional tank is fine as well. But, if you want an extra layer of convenience, a tankless system may be what you are looking for.

Tankless Water Heater Vs A Traditional Water Heater

What Is A Tankless Water Heater?A traditional water heater is a tank that sits in your basement normally, and stores a certain amount of hot water. Then when it’s needed, the hot water runs to your shower, dishwasher, etc. This has been the system for years, and it works just fine typically.

For a tankless water heater, a smaller heating system is hooked up to a water intake. When hot water is needed, the water goes through the heating system to wherever the hot water is needed, be it the shower, dishwasher, etc. again.

There are a few advantages the tankless water heater has over the traditional tanked system.

Endless Hot Water

The best advantage to a tankless water heater is the endless hot water. With a traditional tank, it can only hold so much water. After a certain amount of consumption, the hot water will run out. If you are part of a big family that got ready in the morning, you probably know the routine. This is the most common frustration with a traditional water heater.

Conversely, a tankless water heater doesn’t hold any hot water. Instead, it heats the water as needed, providing you with an endless supply. This is fantastic for homes that require a lot of hot water in certain parts of the day.

Better Energy Efficiency

A traditional water heater uses a tank to keep the water hot. This means you can go for hours of the day not needing any hot water, but the system is still using energy to keep the water hot. That’s hours and hours a day your system is consuming energy unnecessarily.

A tankless water heater only uses energy as needed. This is going to result in less energy being consumed, and saving a few dollars on energy bills.

Less Space Consumed

A traditional tank is bigger than a tankless water heater. It usually sits in your basement and takes up some space. A tankless water heater is normally pressed against a wall, and is only a bit bigger than an electrical panel.

This isn’t a huge deal, and the space a water heater usually takes up is in a utility area, but still this difference can lead to more storage space, and a bit more convenience in your basement.

No Major Flooding

One of the major risks a traditional tank comes with is a leak. If you have a system that holds 40-50 gallons of water, and it bursts, that is a whole lot of water on the floor of your home. This is something you hopefully never have to experience, but if you have a tanked water heater, there’s always a possibility.

With a tankless system, no water is stored, so if there is a leak or problem, it’s very small and can be addressed quickly.
