Converting a Furnace to a Heat Pump in Elgin, IL
Most Elgin homes heat with a natural gas furnace. That furnace works right up until it doesn't, and then you're making a fast decision about a system you'll live with for the next fifteen to twenty years. A heat pump conversion is worth understanding before that day arrives.
A heat pump handles your heating and your cooling with one system. In summer it works the way your air conditioner already does. In winter it reverses, pulling heat from the outdoor air and moving it inside. No combustion, no flame, no flue.
Compass installs ducted systems, ductless mini splits, and dual-fuel setups that keep your existing furnace as backup. We're not a general contractor who also sells heat pumps. This is the work we specialize in, and Elgin's housing stock is the housing stock we know.

YOUR OPTIONS
Three Ways to Convert Your Elgin Home to a Heat Pump
There isn't one right answer. The correct path depends on your ductwork, your electrical panel, your home's insulation, and how you actually use the space. Here are the three routes we design most often in Elgin.
Gas Furnace to Ducted Heat Pump
If your home already has ductwork in reasonable condition, this is the most direct conversion. Compass installs compact, variable-speed ducted heat pump systems for this application. Learn about Daikin FIT.
Dual Fuel: Keep the Furnace, Add the Heat Pump
A dual-fuel system pairs a heat pump with your gas furnace. The heat pump handles most of the season, and the furnace takes over automatically during the coldest stretches.
Ductless Conversion
If you're heating with radiators, boilers, or electric baseboard, a ductless conversion changes the whole equation without opening walls. See Mitsubishi Electric ductless and Daikin ductless mini splits.
Not sure whether ducted, ductless, or dual-fuel makes sense for your home?
THE ELGIN QUESTION
Do Heat Pumps Actually Work in Illinois Winters?
Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps produce heat well below freezing, and they are a genuinely different technology from the units that gave heat pumps a bad reputation decades ago.
But a heat pump's output does decline as the temperature drops, and Elgin does get stretches of subzero weather. That's not a reason to avoid a heat pump. It's a reason to size and design the system correctly, and to be honest about whether you want a backup heat source.
That's exactly what the in-home consultation is for. We perform a load calculation on your actual house, then tell you what your options genuinely look like.
WHAT'S ACTUALLY AVAILABLE
Heat Pump Rebates and Incentives in Elgin, IL
The incentive landscape changed significantly, and a lot of what you'll read online is out of date.
The federal tax credit is gone. The 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired December 31, 2025. Systems installed in 2026 do not qualify.
Utility rebates are still here. Elgin is ComEd territory for electricity, and ComEd continues to offer residential rebates on qualifying heat pumps and ductless systems. Most of these rebates are applied through participating contractors rather than reimbursed afterward, which means who installs your system determines whether you get the money at all.
Manufacturer promotions rotate. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric run seasonal offers that don't always appear on the utility rebate sheets.
We track the programs, tell you what you qualify for before you commit, and handle the paperwork. See our current ComEd rebate details or ask during your consultation. We also offer monthly payment options.

Compass Heating and Air Conditioning is a veteran-owned company based in East Dundee, minutes from Elgin. Owner Mike Gundersen has built the business around high-performance comfort systems, including a working showroom where you can see and hear equipment before you buy it.
Heat pumps are still newer technology to a lot of Chicagoland contractors. Homeowners regularly tell us they had trouble finding an installer who could actually answer their questions. That's the gap we fill.

Elgin Heat Pump Conversion FAQs
Do heat pumps work in Elgin winters?
Yes. Cold-climate heat pumps produce heat well below freezing. Output does decrease as temperatures fall, which is why correct sizing matters and why many Elgin homeowners choose a dual-fuel system that keeps the gas furnace as backup for the coldest stretches.
Can I keep my gas furnace?
Absolutely. That is a dual-fuel conversion, and it is our most common recommendation in Elgin. The heat pump handles most of the season and the furnace covers the extremes. The switchover is automatic.
Do I need ductwork?
No. Ductless mini splits deliver heating and cooling without any duct system, which makes them well suited to Elgin's older homes and to houses currently on boilers or electric baseboard.
How much does a heat pump conversion cost in Elgin?
It depends on your home's size, your existing ductwork and electrical service, and which conversion path you choose. We provide a written, itemized proposal after the in-home consultation, including every rebate you qualify for, so you are comparing real numbers rather than a range off the internet. Financing is available.
Is there still a federal tax credit for heat pumps?
No. The federal 25C credit expired December 31, 2025 and does not apply to systems installed in 2026. ComEd utility rebates and manufacturer promotions are still available, and we'll identify what you qualify for.
How long does the installation take?
Most conversions are completed in one to three days depending on scope. Electrical service upgrades or duct modifications can extend that. We give you a firm timeline in your written proposal, and we recommend enrolling in our annual maintenance program to protect the system afterward.
